Emotional baggage can inhibit positive action and restrict freedom. Who wants to carry a bunch of emotional baggage on their shoulders?
Often times there are incidents which happen to us over which we had no control, but we're back in the driver's seat when we center our attention on the now and future. There is no such device as selectively forgetting trauma to the nervous system. As a matter of fact, the more you try to forget a problem in the past the more it gets ingrained. This process occurs because in neural networks, those patternings reflecting an emotionally charged situation fire in an attempt to understand the full results of what happened, why it happened, and possible solutions; they thereby become facilitated and more ingrained in our memories. Forgiving is a mental exercise, forgetting is letting it go, so counseling and contemplating the issues may actually create more strain on the attempt to let it go. The purest way to release yourself from the past is to keep your sights on the distant future, your goals, your fulfillment, the 5, 10, 30 years from now you. The past can not be undone, it is written in the wiring of your brain, but in order for those memories to lose their power over you, there have to be plans and goals to keep your mind forward thinking, not backward thinking. This process lets the past recede into the dark (neural abatement) as you shine your light forward. This is an important step in developing clean karma; you have learned as much as you are able from a negative encounter with others or an error in judgment and now you are moving forward. Now when you meet others you can have a positive attitude looking forward, and you will no longer be letting the past stand between you and your future happiness. Thus, in this way you will free yourself of the past.
